Unpredictable, more intense and catastrophic events related to climate is wreaking havoc around the world. Recently, the northern part of Luzon was hit by strong rains followed by flash floods and landslides in Banaue. Video footage shown in the media on the landslides is a wake-up call to predict, prepare and practice --- particularly in areas where there is high vulnerability for flooding and landslides. Evacuation and disruptions in transport lanes also pose risks for COVID-19, hence the complexity of disasters in our country.

Which parts of the Philippines are most prone to flooding and landslides? What kind of preparations does the health sector need to do to protect our health facilities and health assets (including our human resources) from catastrophic events that can be compounded by disease outbreaks?

In this episode of STOP C.O.V.I.D. DEATHS, disaster risk expert, Dr. Mahar A. Lagmay will walk us through the basic principles of risk mapping and identification of vulnerable areas to floods and landslides. DOH Regional Director for the Cordillera Autonomous Region (CAR) Dr. Rio L. Magpantay will relay his personal experience during the recent Banaue flashfloods and landslides and the role of front line health workers in complex disasters. Synthesis and Closing Remarks will be delivered by Dr. Stella Marie L. Jose, Deputy Director for Health Operations of the UP Philippine General Hospital.
