All of us have older members of our families. Filipino families have been very protective of their seniors during the pandemic as they have been at high risk for COVID-19 infection and many have suffered the most from complications of COVID, prolonged hospital stays and even death.

For those who have survived the pandemic, there have been multiple obstacles to receiving routine care, availing of vaccination. Many families were so afraid for their seniors that they stayed inside their rooms and were not even allowed to leave the house even when the environment was safer. The mental health impact of lockdowns is still unknown, but this is accompanied by "deconditioning" due to the inability to walk around, attend to the garden, meet with friends or visit their favorite places.

The total number of older persons in the Philippines is estimated at 10 million. This is expected to double by 2040.

Within the population of senior citizens, a growing number suffer from dementia. The numbers are unknown and information about early signs and symptoms of dementia and how to care for seniors with dementia is insufficient.

In this episode of STOP COVID DEATHS we will tackle dementia during the pandemic and how frontline workers can help families, particularly caregivers of older persons with information and guidance on what they can do to maintain a good quality of life for seniors with dementia.

Our experts are the leading gerontologists in the country: Dr. Shelley De La Vega of the Institute on Aging of the National Institutes of Health and Dr. Evangeline B. Dela Fuente, Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine of the UP College of Medicine. Synthesis and Closing Remarks will be delivered by Dr. Stella Marie L. Jose, Deputy Director for Health Operations at UP Philippine General Hospital.

Together they will shed light on dementia - its signs and symptoms, prevention, management and most importantly how to take care of the caregivers for patients with dementia who may suffer from burn-out.
