In mid-May, the World Health Organization reported that 12 countries had cases of the monkeypox virus across 3 WHO regions. WHO reported a Disease Outbreak News to raise awareness, inform readiness and response efforts, but the situation is still evolving.
Monkeypox is not new. A number of African countries have been endemic for the virus for several years - including Benin, Cameroon, The Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Ghana. Ivory Coast, Liberia, Nigeria, the Republic of the Congo, Sierra Leone and South Sudan. What is new is that monkeypox cases are now reported in non-endemic countries like Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the USA - and thus far there are no known travel links.
So how is the disease transmitted? What are its signs and symptoms? How can we differentiate the rash from monkeypox from other types of rashes? Considering the number of OFWs working in Africa, are there specific risks for Filipinos that we need to alert them to? How serious is this disease? Are we prepared for monkeypox to appear in the Philippines?
In this episode of STOP COVID DEATHS, Director Enrique A. Tayag, known epidemiologist and risk communicator from the Department of Health will tell us the story of how this started, what its spread means and what we need to know as frontliners. Dr. Joseph Adrian Buensalido, an infectious disease expert and a Clinical Associate Professor with the Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine at UP Philippine General Hospital, will talk about diagnosis, differentials, clinical management, treatment, prognosis. Dr. Merrill Van Yu, an Adult Infectious Diseases Fellow with the Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine at UP Philippine General Hospital will talk about hospital-based measures and preparations for protection of healthworkers against monkeypox.
