Diploma in Bioethics

Brief Description
The Diploma in Bioethics program has graduated five (5) students since its implementation in the first semester of academic year 2004-2005. The graduates include an ophthalmologist researcher who recently received the Dangal ng Bayan award, an obstetrician gynecologist, two (2) dentists, and a lawyer who is actively involved in policy development. There are fifteen (15) students currently enrolled in the Diploma in Bioethics program as of the first semester of academic year 2005-2006, composed of physician-researchers, lawyers, dentists, and veterinarians.
Rationale and Objectives
With this program, the University of the Philippines can develop a bioethics training hub for professionals in Asia and assert regional leadership in this field.
Admission Requirements
Admission to the program shall require:
- a baccalaureate degree (preferably in medicine and other life sciences, and in the social sciences) or a diploma in bioethics degree;
- a demonstrated high degree of intellectual capacity and aptitude for advanced study and research;
- language proficiency; and
- such other requirements as may be imposed by the University for the admission of students to its graduate programs.
The selection of students shall also take into account their interest in bioethics, a commitment to continue working in a bioethics-related position, maturity, potential for leadership as evidenced by positions of responsibility, and academic excellence.
