Since its creation in 1994 as a clinical department, the Department of Emergency Medicine has constantly developed policies and guidelines to develop a world-class emergency medical care system and has served as the frontline in emergency care of patients coming in into the University of the Philippines’-Philippine General Hospital through its training and service arms.
The training arm of the department serves to develop competent, compassionate and ethical emergency medicine professionals responsive to the needs of the Filipino people while its service arm aims to render timely, quality emergency care whilst spreading the practice of emergency medicine through its extension services. The Department has also served as the center of disaster medicine and pre-hospital care through its Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and has been involved in various researches as part of the continuing medical education of its faculties, residents and staff.

The UP-PGH Department of Emergency Medicine is committed to the development of world class emergency health care system staffed by competent, compassionate and ethical emergency medicine professionals responsive to the emergency medical needs of the Filipino people.
MISSION
The missions of the UP-PGH Department of Emergency Medicine are: to render timely, quality emergency care; to train emergency medicine professional teams to become competent, innovative and humane health care providers, educators and leaders; and, to undertake relevant emergency medicine researches. It shall serve as the center for disaster medicine and pre-hospital care in the country.
Objectives
- To manage and treat injured and acutely ill patients
- To integrate and link with other units, departments, and other institutions
- To provide appropriate training and education for its personnel as well as other agencies and institutions
- To maintain a medical records unit of all patients seeking emergency care services that will be incorporated with the Hospital Records Management
- To assure and maintain a quality central mechanism for the quality and appropriate care rendered to patients and clients
- To encourage medical research activities
- To function as a disaster preparedness center
- To develop a program for pre-hospital treatment

Residency Training
The Department offers a three-year residency training program designed to be an evolving educational experience—clinically and administratively, with the integration of ED management skills on the final year of training. The program encompasses both service and clinical training in patient care within the Emergency Department as well as in assigned rotations in specialty areas of Otorhinolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Toxicology, Orthopedics, Radiology, Trauma, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and in the Adult and Pediatric Intensive Care Units. Residents of the program are also trained in pre-hospital care delivery through the Emergency Medical Service. The program is the first and the only university-based training in Emergency Medicine throughout the Philippines.
The Department of Emergency Medicine currently has a Track B Residency Program for lateral entry residents from other institutions.

The Department has two new ambulances to cope with the increasing demands of the PGH patients and nearby communities.
The Pay-ER area is now functional.
There are plans for the renovation of the Department, which will take effect by January 2018.
The Department conducts regular Basic Life Support and First Aid courses for students, employees and the surrounding communities.
The Department of Emergency Medicine has research in several areas of Emergency Medicine such as prehospital care and disaster medicine, administration, resuscitation and medical education.
The Department is currently accepting applicants for the Residency Training Program.
