Master of Science in Pharmacology
Offered by Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology

Brief Description

This is a 2-year program which you can complete in 5 years.

Rationale and Objectives

In the 1960’s, the Master of Science in Pharmacology program was approved for implementation. It is one of the oldest institutional graduate programs of the University of the Philippines College of Medicine. The first revision was approved by the Board of Regents on February 27, 1992. In 2004, the Board of Regents approved the official change of name of the Department of Pharmacology to the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology. This change was reflected in the scope of educational offerings within the department including the MS Pharmacology program. Thus, in 2006, under a new leadership in the Department, a revitalized program considering progress in the field of pharmacology and toxicology was implemented with new students accepted into the program.

As a leading academic and research institution in the Philippines offering an MS Pharmacology program, our graduates are expected to have advanced knowledge and skills in the multidisciplinary and/or specialized fields of pharmacology and toxicology. The program outcomes include the following:

PROGRAM OUTCOMES
  1. Demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills in specialized or multidisciplinary fields of pharmacology and toxicology for their chosen professional practice and self-directed research.
  2. Apply developments in the specific field of practice in pharmacology and toxicology to determine applicability and utility in their practiced profession.
  3. Communicate scientific content in professional or technical forums and/or in various written media for public awareness and utilization of research output in pharmacology and toxicology.
  4. Act professionally and ethically with social responsibility.
  5. Generate knowledge and innovations in pharmacology and toxicology to address our national needs and/or the global community.
  6. Work independently toward lifelong learning in his/her practiced professional field in pharmacology and toxicology.

Highlights

Following decades of implementation of the current MS Pharmacology, we have recognized the need to create a more responsive program. It should be one that addresses the needs of prospective clients while incorporating the recent advances in the field of both pharmacology and toxicology and developing a sense of nationalism to improve human life.

The MSc in Pharmacology curriculum takes into consideration the United Nations Sustainable Development (UN SDG) Goal 3 which is to ”ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.” It is also aligned with UN SDG Goal 4 which is to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”. It has been our earnest desire to streamline our course curriculum and program requirements in a manner most beneficial to the students while ensuring excellence in pursuit of the MS Pharmacology degree.

Admission Requirements

In general, there is no change in the admission requirements from the last revision approved by the Board of Regents in 1992 except for the removal of the required non- credit entry prerequisites. This program will remain open to holders of a Bachelor of Science degree or its equivalent and preferably with a background in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics. It is also open to holders of the degree of Doctor of Medicine and related sciences (e.g. Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine).

Admission requirements are submitted for evaluation to the NGOHS. Upon preliminary evaluation, there will be interview of the MS applicants and written exam (as necessary).
