The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology had its formal beginning in 1952 during the chairmanship of Dr. Honoria Acosta-Sison for the Department of Obstetrics, and Dr. Constantino P. Manahan for the Department of Gynecology. In 1964, the two Departments merged under the leadership of Dr. Manahan. The Department has come a long way since - committing to a dynamic leadership, excellence in training and education, service and social relevance, research and substantial contributions to national health policies for reproductive health. It is presently one of the major Departments of the UPCM-PGH. Today, we have 61 consultants, 63 residents and 46 post-residency fellows.
The Department offers undergraduate programs: a 4-year residency training program in General Obstetrics and Gynecology, and post-residency fellowship training programs in specialized fields. It has pioneered the creation of eight Subspecialties- from their inception, organization, accreditation, recognition, and optimization. These Subspecialties include: Gynecologic Oncology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Obstetric and Gynecologic Ultrasound, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Infections in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Urologic and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery, Family Planning, and Trophoblastic Diseases.
The Department also conducts postgraduate courses in General Obstetrics and Gynecology for physicians practicing the specialty, and for residents in their senior years. The subspecialty units of the Department also offer short, highly specialized courses periodically.
The Reproductive Biology Unit, the family planning arm of the Department, conducts training courses in basic family planning methods, surgical sterilization, and counseling for physicians and nurses, together with other family planning service providers.
Residents from various training centers in Metro Manila and other parts of the country come to the Department for observership in different Subspecialty services.
The different vice chairs: for Training, Academic Affairs, Research, Graduate and Postgraduate Programs, and Services, all aid the Department Chairman. There are three general and seven specialty service chiefs. They are one- as are the other members of the faculty, with the Chairman in their consistent effort to attain the Department goal:
“... to contribute to the national effort of providing optimum health to the Filipino people through excellence and leadership in training, service and research in the field of obstetrics and gynecology”.
The Department continues to be the premier training institution with a progressive learning environment. Projects and innovations are currently at work including the expansion and renovation of the new OB Admitting Section Complex, the building of a world-class IVF Center, and the shift to minimally invasive surgeries inclusive of the use of the Transmedic Robot XI System.
Despite the many challenges this Department has faced over the years, it continues to remain steadfast and resilient. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to several adjustments in the Department, firmly grounded in its essence of providing quality service to the Filipino women. Outpatient services shifted to telehealth consultations, while in-patient services continued with priority for urgent and emergent conditions. Conferences, lectures, skills simulation, and learning activities are maximized through the use of virtual online platforms. Research projects have expanded with the inclusion of topics relating to COVID-19 and various Obstetric and Gynecologic conditions.
The Department continues to adapt and grow amidst all the challenges it has faced. As it has done over the decades- the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology will continue to uphold its thrust in excellence for Service, Research, and Training.
Philosophy
The faculty of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of the Philippines-Manila, College of Medicine and Philippine General Hospital believes in the joint responsibility of the state, the community and the individual in the promotion and maintenance of health and common welfare. Mission
We are a community of empowered scholars in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology, imbued with spiritual vigor and zeal for life-long learning; under exemplary mentorship, total commitment and support, able to perpetuate our kind and discover new knowledge about the specialty, nurture strong values and the finest of character, arouse a deep sense of nationalism, and ensure the best possible healthcare for the Filipino people. In an atmosphere of academic freedom and integrity, compassion, justice, respect for persons and individual rights, we are committed to a dynamic leadership and excellence in training and education, research and service, socially relevant, and contributing to national health policies for reproductive health.
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology started as 2 separate Departments. The Department of Obstetrics was established in 1907 with the Philippine Medical School, and later on became one of the 11 primary departments after the opening of the University of the Philippines (UP) – Manila, College of Medicine in 1910. Gynecology was initially a section of the Department of Surgery, but subsequently became an independent Department in 1922.
It was in 1963 that the 2 Departments were merged as the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, under the approval of the UP Board of Regents. Since then, the Department has grown into one of the most structured departments of the UP-Manila, College of Medicine and Philippine General Hospital (PGH).
