Dr Agnes D. Mejia, a renowned nephrologist and a dedicated, multi-awarded medical educator, was the Dean of the UP College of Medicine from 2012-2018. Her thrusts at the beginning of her term included enhancement of internal organizational efficiency, ie college procurement system, the pursuit of financial stability and sustainability programs towards self sufficiency, ie BOR approved Incremental Tuition Fee (ITF) trust fund that provided honoraria to the clinical associate professors without plantilla items based on faculty loading and assurance of job security and training of the administrative staff through the “Winning Hearts and Minds Program”. Her flagship program was the Program for Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety with the vision “Safer Health for the Filipino People”. During her term, the College was certified by the ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance (AUN-QA), the first medical school in the Philippines to be certified, implemented the Return Service Obligation Program (RSOP) thru “ Kumusta na Bayan”, revised the entry criteria for and implemented the MD-PhD program, created new college admissions policy, expanded the virtualization of courses and clinical simulation laboratory, and offered HIV “ OPT-OUT “ program that offered testing, counseling, and treatment, all in confidence. After her retirement, she stewarded the completion of the Henry Sy Sr Hall Medical Sciences Building that was turned over to the College in November 8, 2022.
