Dr. Antonio M. Montalban obtained his medical degree from the UP College of Medicine in 1969 and a professor emeritus, took residency at the PGH Department of Orthopedics, and fellowship in pediatric orthopedics at the Nuffield Hospital in Oxford, United Kingdom. A dedicated mentor and model teacher, he was conferred the rank of Professor Emeritus in the UPCM. Considered to be one of the pillars of Philippine orthopedics, he organized the Pediatric Orthopedic Service at PGH, later becoming the department chair. He also served as the president of the Philippine Orthopedics Association, co-founder of the ASEAN Orthopedic Association, and founder and Editor of the Philippine Journal of Orthopedics. During his term as Director of the Philippine General Hospital, he put up the Department of Emergency Medicine and was instrumental in forming the PGH Emergency Medicine Program and the Emergency Medicine Residency Program which endeavor toward the delivery of better emergency care for patients. He also founded the Philippine Society of Emergency Care Physicians that attracted many specialists nationwide, and put up its own scientific journal, the only emergency journal in the Philippines. An advocate of employee welfare, he also created the PGH Medical Foundation, Inc, and implemented the Magna Carta for Health Workers, and the PGH Bayanihan Multipurpose Cooperative, among others. For his distinguished years of service and immeasurable contributions in health care, he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2009 and Outstanding Medical Service Award in 2019 from the University of the Philippines Medical Alumni Society.
