Dr. Aristeo Rizal Ubaldo, nephew of Dr. Jose Rizal, served as the chairman of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery. At the time, the specialty was known as EENT - Eyes, Ears, Nose and Throat. During his chairmanship, Dr. Ubaldo toured famous eye, ear, nose, and throat clinics around Europe. With a special instrument called Ignacio Barraquer’s Erysiphake which he took with him back to the Philippines, he introduced intracapsular cataract lens extraction in the country — a milestone for Philippine Ophthalmology. He also performed the first laryngectomy with Dr. Antonio Fernando, Sr. in 1923.
