The Virtual Museum:
A Glimpse of the Storied History of UPCM

BALDOMERO ROXAS, MD

Dr. Baldomero Roxas obtained his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Santo Tomas, and is a good friend of Dr. Jose Rizal. Following his medical education, he underwent formal postgraduate training in Surgery, and Obstetrics and Gynecology in various hospitals in Spain. He was part of the propaganda movement in Spain, and when he returned to the Philippines, he promoted the nationalist cause as a newspaperman and publisher. Upon the opening of the Philippine Medical School, now known as the UP College of Medicine, Dr. Baldomero Roxas was appointed as an Assistant Professor in Obstetrics by his colleague, Dr. Fernando Calderon, later becoming the head of the department in 1922, and served until he retired at the age of 75, becoming the longest serving head of the department. The Philippine Obstetrical Gynecological Society bestows an award in his honor every year, aptly named the Dr. Baldomero Roxas Memorial Lecture and Award to celebrate his life and contributions to medicine.
