The Virtual Museum:
A Glimpse of the Storied History of UPCM

BENJAMIN A. BARRERA, MD, (UPCM DEAN 1960-1967)

Dr. Benjamin A. Barrera held the position of Dean of the UP College of Medicine from 1960-1967. He was a diligent pathologist who had a hand in the creation of the Philippine Society of Pathologists’ (PSP) Board of Pathology as the first secretary-treasurer. He was a multi-awarded clinician and educator, as well as a prominent academician and researcher. Among his contributions was his approval in the formation of two degree programs (Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy). While originally starting as a part of the UP College of Medicine, these would eventually serve as the origin of the School of Allied Medical Professions. Furthermore, he also served as an Editor-in-Chief for Acta Medica Philippina in the years 1962-1963. The Philippine Society of Pathologists honored him by establishing the Dr. Benjmin A. Barrera Service Award (Posthumous) that is given to a recently deceased member who has rendered exemplary service for the society and has served the society in an official capacity.
