Dr. Candido M. Africa was an alumnus of the UP College of Medicine that pursued further studies at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and eventually obtained a Degree of Tropical Medicine in 1929. In the same year, he became a Fellow of the Topen Institute of Hamburg, Germany. He also studied in Harvard Medical School and Johns Hopkins University from 1930-1931. He returned to the Philippines and became a professor in the Department of Parasitology of the School of Hygiene and Public Health (now College of Public Health). As a researcher, he was able to work with human flukes, parasites that can cause heart failure, and publish numerous scientific articles. He was awarded Gold Medal of Merit and conferred Diploma of Honor for distinguished achievements in the field of Parasitology.
