Dr. Constantino Manahan graduated from the UP College of Medicine in 1936, later on specializing in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology, receiving formal training overseas. Renowned for his "painless" birth technique, Dr. Constantino Manahan was recognized as one of the best in his field. He was committed to a principle: "health for all regardless of race, creed or economic status” - and he has probably given life to many of the city's less advantaged born between 1972 and 1988 through the Makati Indigent Program (MIP). From "1983 Physician of the Year" to Professor Emeritus in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology, he has trained many of the country's finest who we know today. Dr. Manahan was also the first Filipino Diplomate in OBGYN in the United States and the only doctor to achieve senior residency in the then separate fields of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Johns Hopkins University. Despite being offered positions abroad, his heart forever resided among his fellow countrymen whom he chose to serve until his death in 1988. He was the first Chairman of the merged Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the College of Medicine and PGH. He was also the second President of POGS. Even after retirement, he made weekly rounds at the PGH wards to give his insights and advice on the various cases being managed. He published many reports on choriocarcinoma, ectopic pregnancy, endometriosis and operative obstetrics. Dr. Constantino P. Manahan received two major awards from POGS in a single year, the Baldomero Roxas and Honoria Acosta-Sison awards. As an inspiration to many young ob-gyn researchers in the country, he is honored by the POGS by naming the Outstanding Young Researcher award after him. He had gone on to train many of the country’s finest obstetricians and gynecologists today, later becoming recognized as a Professor Emeritus of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of the Philippines.
