The Virtual Museum:
A Glimpse of the Storied History of UPCM

EMILIO E. BULATAO, MD

Dr. Emilio Bulatao was a distinguished scientist and renowned Physiologist. He was appointed Assistant Professor in Physiology in 1919, promoted to Professor, and later became the head of the Department of Physiology and Biochemistry, succeeding the late Dr. Isabelo Concepcion, in 1940. It was during Dr. Bulatao’s term that the department was restructured into two separate entities, thus becoming the Department of Physiology, and the Department of Biochemistry. Dr. Bulatao was a staunch believer of the inevitable correlation of the three basic sciences — physiology, biochemistry, and pathology — with clinical medicine. He was also extremely dedicated to teaching: His scholarly approach in teaching medicine is aptly reflected in the competence of many of those who graduated from the College at the time.
