The Virtual Museum:
A Glimpse of the Storied History of UPCM

ERNESTO D. DOMINGO, MD (UPM CHANCELLOR 1988-1993,

Dr. Ernesto D. Domingo attained the rank of Professor Emeritus in the UP College of Medicine. During his tenure as the Chancellor of the University of the Philippines Manila, he established the Clinical Epidemiology Unit in the Philippine General Hospital. As a passionate researcher, he also established the Institute of Socio-Biomedical Research, which later became the National Institutes of Health. A specialist in hepatology and gastroenterology, Dr. Domingo founded the UP Manila Liver Study Group which studied viral hepatitis and liver disease, establishing the link between Hepatitis B and liver cancer. Because of his findings, the government promoted mandatory hepatitis vaccination. For everything that Dr. Domingo has contributed for the country, he was awarded as one of the recipients of the 2013 Ramon Magsaysay Award and was conferred the title of National Scientist of the Philippines.
