The Virtual Museum:
A Glimpse of the Storied History of UPCM

FERNANDO R. CALDERON, MD (UPCM DEAN 1916-1936)

Dr. Fernando Calderon was a revolutionary physician - a leading Filipino obstetrician during the American Colonial period and was also the first director of the beloved Philippine General Hospital in 1916.  Administrative and faculty positions in the College were predominantly held by American doctors in the early years of UPCM. Progressively, as more Filipino physicians made their way into the faculty and administration, Dr. Calderon was the first Filipino to hold the position of Dean.  Along with being the College Dean, he also simultaneously held the position of PGH Director until retirement. After obtaining his medical degree and serving as municipal doctor of Samar, he visited different European hospitals and served as president of Clinique Tarnier, a five-storey hospital that specialized in maternity, gynecology, and puericulture. He later returned to the Philippines bringing back everything that he had learned abroad. He served as the founding Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics of the College of Medicine. He was also instrumental in the creation of La Gota de Leche, a charity-led organization that has operated uninterruptedly since World War II, providing nutritional support to indigent malnourished children and breastfeeding mothers. The main building of the UPCM, Calderon Hall, is named after former Dean Fernando Calderon.
