GREGORIO SINGIAN, MD

Dr. Gregorio Singian is regarded as the “Father of Philippine Surgery”. He received his M.D. from the University of Santo Tomas. He initially served as a doctor for the Revolutionary Army during the Filipino-American war under General Maximo Hizon and Tomas Mascardo. After the war, he became the director of San Juan de Dios Hospital. He also taught surgery and is regarded as the first Filipino Associate Professor in the Philippine Medical School, which later became UP College of Medicine. He founded the Philippine College of Surgeons in 1936. He also served as the editor of Revista Filipina de Medicine y Farmacia in 1910.
