The Virtual Museum:
A Glimpse of the Storied History of UPCM

JOSE EDUQUE, MD

Dr. Jose Eduque was born in Dao, Capiz, to Valentin Eduque and Lutgarda Alba. He finished his medical education at the Philippine Medical School, a forerunner to today’s University of the Philippines – College of Medicine. Afterwards, he was notable as being among the pioneering members of the Department of Surgery, setting the standard both in his practice and in his teaching. As one of the first urologists in the country, he took part in a variety of historical operations, being the first Filipino to perform a radical prostatectomy, and being part of the team that conducted the first modified synchronous combined abdominoperineal operations. By 1925, he was given the distinction of becoming the Head of the Department of Surgery, a post he held until his death in 1938.
