Dr. Jose M. Albert graduated from UST Medicine and Universidad Central de Madrid where he obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree. He furthered his medical education studying under different renowned clinicians and medical educators in France, Germany and Belgium. In France, he first practiced medicine under Dr. Potain, the cardiologist for whom the “Potain sign” is named; obstetrics under Dr. Budin, the Father of Modern Perinatal Medicine; and pediatrics under Dr. Grancher, a pioneer in the study of pediatric tuberculosis. In Germany, he studied gynecology under Olshausen. During his time in Belgium, he studied medicine alongside Dr. Jose Rizal. When he returned to the Philippines, he founded the Colegio Medico-Farmaceutico, the first medical society in the Philippines. Aside from medicine, he was active in politics during the Philippine-American War and became president of Partido Federalista. During his time as a faculty member of the UP College of Medicine, he headed the newly-formed Department of Pediatrics until his retirement.
