The Virtual Museum:
A Glimpse of the Storied History of UPCM

JOSE V. SILAO, MD

Dr Jose V. Silao graduated from the UPCM class 1956, and took his residency in Surgery at UP-PGH. He took his Fellowship in Orthopedic Surgery at Columbia University (1963) and Children's Hospital Medical Center in Boston (1964). He was appointed as the first Chairman of the PGH Department of Orthopedics  in 1971, where he served till 1983.

During his tenure, the basic foundation of the department was established and fast-tracked. This involved training (residency) and teaching programs for students, development of physical infrastructure and facilities, improving patient care and services, and faculty development. Numerous graduates from the residency program were sent abroad to pursue further training in the different subspecialties.

Dr Silao was also the Chairman of the Philippine Board of Orthopedics, fellow of the POA, PCS, ACS.
