A Glimpse of the Storied History of UPCM

LIBORIO D. GOMEZ, MD

Dr Liborio D. Gomez was one of the most eminent pathologists of his time. A native of San Fernando, Pampanga, Dr. Gomez finished his medical education as a government fellow in the University of Chicago (Rush Medical College). Upon completion of his studies, he was one of the first formally trained Filipino Pathologists in his time. He became head of the Department of Pathology and Bacteriology at the University of the Philippines College of Medicine, serving in this post for a total of 26 years. Upon retirement, he was then offered the opportunity to establish and lead the new Department of Pathology and Microbiology in the FEU-Dr. Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation, which was newly established at the time. With a legacy in the field that has served to inspire those to come, he also served as the first president of the Philippine Society of Pathologists. Years after his death, the society honored him by establishing the Dr. Liborio Gomez Memorial Award and Lecture, given to those in the country who have been involved in the advancement and promotion of the science of Pathology in the country.
