The Virtual Museum:
A Glimpse of the Storied History of UPCM

PAUL FREER, MD (UPCM DEAN 1907-1912)

Dr. Paul Freer was the first Dean of the newly formed Philippine Medical School, which eventually evolved into the UP College of Medicine in 1909. He was appointed Dean amid a rising need for doctors due to cholera and smallpox that ravaged the Philippines at that time. He held this position from 1907 to 1912. Furthermore, he also simultaneously held the positions of Director of the Bureau of Science and Professor of Chemistry. With his help, the Philippine government facilitated programs for the advancement of medical education as well as basic sciences and research. Additionally, he started accepting qualified Filipinos into the college faculty during his term.
