The Virtual Museum:

PERLA D. SANTOS OCAMPO, MD (UPM CHANCELLOR 1993-1

Dr. Perla D. Santos Ocampo was a Professor Emeritus of the UP College of Medicine. After graduating from the UP College of Medicine, she trained as a resident in the Department of Pediatrics in the Philippine General Hospital and took her Fellowship at the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Santos Ocampo was an advocate against child malnutrition. Her research on diarrheal disease created the policy of the Department of Health on diarrhea-related health concerns. She served as a Chancellor of UP Manila from 1993 until 1999, where she was instrumental in the establishment of the National Institutes of Health. She also founded the National Telehealth Center in recognition of the critical role of information and communication technology. Aside from her work in the University and the Hospital, she was a former president of the Philippine Medical Association. For all of her contribution to the field, she was included in the first batch of TOWNS (The Outstanding Women in the Nation’s Service) awardees in 1975. She was conferred the title of National Scientist of the Philippines in 2010.
