Dr. Porfirio Recio finished his medical education in the Philippine General Hospital and afterwards went on to receive further training in Proctology in Temple University in the United States. He became a fellow of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. Upon returning to the Philippines, he also served as Head of the Department of Surgery in the PGH. Considered by some to be the Father of Colon and Rectal Surgery in the Philippines, he was also given the honor of serving as the first president of the Philippine Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. He co authored the book “Surgical Anatomy of the Colon, Rectum, and Anal Canal” with American surgeon Harry E. Bacon.
