The Virtual Museum:
A Glimpse of the Storied History of UPCM

POTENCIANO GUAZON, MD

Dr. Potenciano Guazon studied preclinical medicine at the University of St. Louis. He was one of the first instructors of surgery in the newly opened Philippine Civil Hospital, which eventually became the Philippine General Hospital. He was the first Filipino head of the Department of Surgery. During his practice, Dr. Guazon performed the first case of mastectomy in the hospital, which was the first surgery done by a Filipino in PGH. He also performed first sphincter-saving resection of the rectum in a female patient with rectal cancer.
