Dr. Vivencio C. Alcantara was among the first pioneers of the Department of Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat, which has since been divided and is now known as the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery of the Philippine General Hospital. Along with Dr. Aristeo Rizal Ubaldo, Dr. Alcantara performed the first local labyrinthectomy in 1927. Furthermore, one of his initiatives was the opening of the first bronchoesophagology clinic in 1932.
