The UP-PGH Department of Anesthesiology has the largest anesthesia training program in the country, providing perioperative care to 60 operating and non-operating units daily and catering to approximately 22,000 cases per year using the state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. The spectrum of anesthetic care delivered ranges from preoperative anesthesia assessment to performance of advanced life-supporting techniques in various settings; from ambulatory surgery and non-operating room procedures to critical and complex surgeries. The residents and fellows rotate in training modules under the supervision of the faculty. Committed to clinical excellence, patient safety, service, and research, the Department was recognized as the Center of Excellence in Anesthesia Training Program for 2016-2018, 2025-2028. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department helped develop the COVID-19 Anesthesia Primer, a set of emergency response pathways and protocols, and held a series of critical care lectures on latest guidelines and standard of care. The faculty, residents, and fellows are likewise actively engaged in research endeavors, as evidenced by their published scientific papers.
MISSION
The Department will be at the forefront of socially-relevant service, globally-competitive education and training, and patient-centered translational research in the field of anesthesiology in the Philippines
VISION
Committed to globally competitive education and training; patient-centered, collaborative, and equitable care; and translational, nationally-relevant research, while maintaining staff development and well-being in a culture of resource stewardship, health equity, and safety
Anesthesiology as a specialty in the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) began in 1948 when Dr. Quintin J. Gomez returned to Manila after 2 years of formal clinical training in Anesthesiology at the University of Illinois Research and Educational Hospital, Chicago under Dr. Max Sadove. Prior to his arrival, anesthesia was administered by medical and non-medical personnel without formal training. American nurse anesthetists worked under the first Head of the Department of Surgery, Major John McDill. Much later, Flora Gutierrez, a nurse and dentist, supervised nurse anesthetists for about four decades before Dr. Gomez re-organized the practice of anesthesia in the hospital. Considered by many to be the father of modern anesthesiology in the Philippines, Dr. Gomez’s arrival ushered an era of safer and improved anesthesia techniques. Carrying with him an army-type portable to-and-fro Heidbrink anesthesia machine off the plane, Dr. Gomez changed anesthesia practice not only in the PGH, but also in the Philippines.
In 1949, Dr. Gomez joined the faculty of the UP College of Medicine, and soon after introduced the subject of Anesthesiology in the curriculum. The first Section of Anesthesiology in the Philippines was then created under the Department of Surgery of the PGH with Dr. Gomez as the section chief. He immediately started the first residency training program in Anesthesiology in the Philippines at the PGH with one resident, Dr. Teodulo San Juan, and 4 faculty consultants: Drs. Gomez, Braulio de Castro, Julia Presbitero, and Leonor Rivera. The Section produced its first locally trained graduate in 1956.
Many surgical firsts were possible due to the advances in anesthesia techniques, including the first craniotomy of pituitary tumors in 1949, the first successful ligation of a patent ductus arteriosus in 1950, and the first mitral commissurotomy in 1952.
Around the world, the belief that the practice of anesthesiology was a practice of medicine and should be handled by specialized doctors strengthened. It was in 1982 upon recommendation by the Dean of the University of the Philippines College of Medicine and the Director of the Philippine General Hospital, Dr. Gloria Aragon, and upon arrival of the Board of Regents, that Anesthesiology in the PGH was formally made into a separate Department, the first in the Philippines, with Dr. Lourdes Africa as the first chairperson.
The Department grew in strength as the faculty of the Anesthesiology Center Western Pacific merged with those of the Philippine General Hospital. Drs. Silao, Sulit Jr., Genuino, Cruz, Rivera, Bataclan, Mary Litonjua, Leonardo Arenas, Lydia Egay, Merle de la Cruz-Odi, IluminadaCamagay, and Loreto Fellizar joined the UP-PGH faculty when the Center ended its mission in 1988.
Realizing the growing need for chronic pain management, Dr. ElenGajo, as section head, laid the ground work of the first Pain Clinic in the Philippines in 1986.
The first fellowship program of the department was in Pediatric Anesthesia. This was initiated by Dr. IluminadaCamagay in 1988. In 1993, Dr. Merle Odi introduced the fellowship program in Pain Management. This was soon followed by a program in Obstetric & Gynecologic Anesthesiology in 1994 under Dr. Alfonso Doloroso. The fellowship program in Thoracic & Cardiovascular Anesthesia was started in 1999 under Dr. VirgilioGenuino and in 2006, the fellowship in Neuroanesthesia was started under Dr. Merle Odi.
During the succeeding years, anesthesia training and services in the PGH expanded. To date PGH has the largest residency training program in the country. From a small section with 4 faculty consultants and 1 resident, it now has a full roster of 39 faculty consultants, 10 fellows, and 54 residents. It has trained 484 anesthesiologists and 81 fellows in various subspecialties. The Department continues to provide anesthesia for at least 50,000 patients a year at more than 50 major and minor operating rooms, as well as anesthesia for therapeutic and diagnostic purposes, and acute and chronic pain services at the PGH.
The Department prides itself in having the most number of Quintin J. Gomez Awardees for Outstanding Achievement in Anesthesiology. Drs. de Castro, Sulit Jr., Silao, Odi, Egay, Cruz, Camagay, Doloroso, Magpuri, Bataclan, and Augustus Damian, Jr. The department itself received the award during the chairmanship of Dr. Silao in 1993.
The Department of Anesthesiology has since then committed itself to continuing the tradition of excellence in training, research, and services in perioperative care and pain management. The Table of Contents of the Philippine Journal of Anesthesiology has been replete with scientific articles originating from the department. Twenty-eight years from its birth, the Department continually produces graduates who excel in their craft, have held key positions in various institutions and organizations, and are involved in charitable activities within and outside the Philippine General Hospital.
