The Department of Neurosciences is one of the youngest departments of the UP College of Medicine and the Philippine General Hospital. Three different sections under the departments of Medicine, Surgery, and Pediatrics were unified under a single department that achieved autonomy on September 30, 1999 under the leadership of Dr. Martesio Perez, who became the first chair of the department. The department was created to respond to the need for specialized care for neurologic patients in the hospital. Today, twenty years from its creation, it is one of the best clinical departments in patient care, medical research and education.
The department is guided by its vision “to become an internationally recognized center of excellence and leadership in neuroscience education, research, training, service and advocacy dedicated to the Filipino, especially for the underserved.” Its mission is “to serve the Filipino people and advance the field of neurosciences by providing excellent and compassionate neurologic and neurosurgical care, developing outstanding human health resources and mentoring future pioneering leaders and advocates. Its core values include empowering leadership and teamwork, public service and compassion, integrity, respect and care for individuals, excellence and academic freedom.
The department participates in team taught courses starting in the third year of medical school (Human Body and Mind I: Integration and Control Systems). One of the highlights of this course is learning how to do the neurologic examination. Neurologic diseases and treatment are taught in the fourth year of medical school (Human Disease and Treatment I: Integration, Coordination and Behavior. By the fifth year of medical school, paper cases on common out patient neurologic illnesses are discussed with the students in small group sessions. Clinical clerkship in neurology is conducted in the sixth year of medical school. Students are allowed participate in the care of patients in the clinics and wards and they attend rounds with the residents and consultants. In the internship year, the students learn more about neurosurgical conditions and treatments.
Residency training programs in adult neurology and neurosurgery are offered by the department. Fellowship programs include training in pediatric neurology, stroke, epilepsy and electrophysiology. These programs have been accredited by their respective specialty societies. The physician trainees of the department are given the privilege to handle a broad array of often complicated in- and out-patient cases through the charity and pay services, as well as in specialty clinics in epilepsy, stroke, headache, dementia, movement disorders, myasthenia gravis, and neuro-oncology. The department places a premium on research as evidenced by its collection of research outputs and publications from its trainees and consultants.
Many graduates of its training programs now practice in different regions in the Philippines. Some have become involved in socio-civic activities in their communities, and hold key positions in various institutions and in local and national organizations. Many graduates have also pursued subspecialty training abroad and have returned to be part of the academe in order to teach and train students and aspiring neurologists and neurosurgeons.

Brain Attack Team
The Brain Attack Team (BAT) is a multi-disciplinary effort of various departments including the Neurosciences, Emergency Medicine, Radiology, Laboratories, Pharmacy, Nursing Services, and Medical Social Services. The BAT protocol outlines time-specific steps to ascertain the diagnosis of ischemic stroke and ensure timely administration of medications for patients who meet the eligibility criteria for intravenous thrombolytic therapy; this BAT protocol is applicable to both pay and service patients.
The activation of the BAT code allows for hastened neuroimaging, processing of laboratory exams, and acquisition of rTPA vials. The protocol also aims to standardize the documentation of stroke cases and rTPA utilization in PGH. Through this effort, the Department of Neurosciences hopes to improve stroke care and outcomes.
